If you find a clear pattern of spam or hacked links pointing at you, you can disavow them.
Why this matters
Most sites never need this. Google says it ignores most spammy links on its own. But if you bought links in the past or got a manual action, the free Disavow tool can help.
✓ How to do it
- Review your backlinks for clear spam or paid-link patterns.
- Check GSC → Security & Manual actions → Manual actions for a link penalty.
- Only act if there's a clear, harmful pattern. Don't disavow normal links.
- Build a disavow file and upload it in Google's Disavow links tool (search 'Google disavow tool' to find it, since it isn't in the GSC menu).
