Baseline Your Page Speed
PageSpeed Insights (PSI) gives you Google's own speed and Core Web Vitals results for any URL, free.
Why this matters
Google uses Core Web Vitals in its ranking systems, and slow pages lose visitors. Content still matters more, but you need a baseline to prove any speed gains later.
✓ How to do it
- Go to pagespeed.web.dev and test your homepage, top service page, and a key blog post.
- Record the mobile results. Mobile matters most for ranking.
- Note the three Core Web Vitals from the real-user data at the top (this comes from the Chrome UX Report, or CrUX). Good scores are LCP (loading) 2.5 seconds or less, INP (response to taps and clicks) 200 ms or less, and CLS (layout shift) 0.1 or less.
- In GSC, open Core Web Vitals to see which groups of pages pass or fail across your whole site.
- Save the PSI Insights and Diagnostics lists. They're your speed to-do list for the Technical phase.

From the field. ABC Lock and Safe, Portland, OR
We ran Lighthouse on the ABC Lock and Safe homepage on 25 September 2026, on a simulated slow 4G phone. It scored 91, with LCP 2.8 s, CLS 0 and 0 ms of blocking time. That LCP is over the 2.5 s line in the lab, even on a lean static site. That is why you record the real user numbers at the top of PageSpeed Insights too. Lab tests use a slow phone on purpose.
Tips & pitfalls
- Test mobile, not desktop. Google crawls and indexes your site with its mobile crawler.
- INP replaced FID as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Ignore any guide that still talks about FID.
