Start With a Plain Static Site
A static site is a folder of plain files. Each page is one HTML file. There is no database and no plugin to break. You can build a good first one in an afternoon.
Why This Matters
The worst mistake is picking a page builder first and the business second. Builders ship heavy code, slow pages and a login that gets attacked. One stale copy of a site once wiped a day of our work, and a folder of plain files makes that easier to catch, because you can see every change.
✓ How To Do It
- Make a folder named after the business. Inside it, make a file called index.html. This is your home page.
- Open the file in any plain text editor. Type a page title, one heading, one short paragraph and your phone number. Save it.
- Double click the file. Your browser opens it. You just built a page.
- Add one file per service, like brake-repair.html or water-heaters.html. Give each one its own heading and its own short paragraph, written for that job.
- Make a folder called images. Put your real photos in it. Shrink each photo to about 1600 pixels wide before you add it.
- Pick a host. Several hosts serve a plain folder for free. Cloudflare and Netlify both have free plans, so read each plan page for the current limits before you rely on one. Upload the folder to it.
- Point your own domain at the host. The host shows you the exact record to add at your domain registrar.
- Open the live address on your phone. Compare it to the folder on your computer. They must match before you change anything else.
- Save a copy of the folder somewhere else before each big edit. Keep the last three copies and delete the rest.

Tips & Pitfalls
- A page builder is fine when you must hand the site to someone who will only ever click, not type. Know that you are trading speed and control for it.
- Last deploy wins. Always edit the copy that is live, never an old folder you found on a drive.
- Do not copy one page ten times and swap the city name. Write each page for real.
