Invite Local Owners as Podcast Guests

A podcast gives local owners a place to tell their own story. You get real content, and they get a page and a link. The invite and the permissions have to be done right.

Why This Matters
The worst mistake is to record someone and then write what you wish they had said. Or to text a stranger out of nowhere to invite them. Both burn the trust you need for the next guest.

✓ How To Do It

  1. Pick guests who do the work and know their trade. Make a short list and look up each one first.
  2. Invite by phone call, in person or by email. Do not cold text. Federal rules require prior express written consent for many marketing texts.
  3. If you email, tell the truth in the subject line, include your postal address and add a clear way to opt out. Honor it.
  4. Say what the show is, how long it takes, and what they get. Do not promise rankings, leads or money.
  5. Send five questions ahead. Ask about real jobs, real mistakes and what they would tell a new owner.
  6. At the start of the recording, say on tape that you are recording and ask for a yes. Keep the recording of that yes. California requires all parties to agree.
  7. Get written permission to publish the audio, the clips and their name and photo.
  8. Build a guest page with their words, their photo, their business name and a link to their own site. Do not add credentials they did not give you, and link any license to the source. See Link To The Source That Issued It.
  9. Send a share kit after you publish. Include the page link, one short clip, one quote card and a line they can post.
  10. If a guest asks you to cut something or take the episode down, do it. See Take It Down When Asked.

Tips & Pitfalls
  • Let the guest see the clip before it goes out when you can.
  • Keep promos about their work, not about you.
  • Record separate audio tracks if your software allows.
