Keep Clients by Helping Them Win
Clients stay when they win. Your job is to help a small independent beat the big chain down the street, and to say what is working in plain words.
Why This Matters
The worst mistake is going quiet after the sale. A client who hears nothing for two months starts asking what they pay for. Frequent small contact keeps a client and finds problems early.
✓ How To Do It
- Book a 15 minute call each month and put it on both calendars. Keep it short and keep it the same day each month.
- Open the report together and point at one number. Ask what they noticed on their side, like busier weekends or a slow week.
- Ask what jobs they want more of. Aim your next month at those jobs, because a plumber who wants water heater work does not need drain pages.
- Ask about their competitor. If a chain opened nearby, look at its profile and site together and find one thing a local owner does better, like answering the phone or showing up the same day.
- Make the owner's real strengths visible. Use real photos of their work, real names with consent, and real years in business. Never invent any of it.
- Ask for a review the right way. Send the link to happy customers after a finished job and never offer a gift for it. See the reviews lesson.
- Fix one small thing for them each month without being asked, like a broken link or an old phone number on a profile.
- Write down what you promised on the call and send it in a two line email the same day.
- If a client wants to leave, ask why, thank them and hand over their logins within days. They may come back, and they may refer you.
Done WhenTwelve months of calls are on the calendar, and the notes sheet for one client has this month's call written up.
Tips & Pitfalls
- Do not pitch a bigger package on every call. Offer more only when you see a real need.
- Keep a note per client with their goals and last call. It stops you from asking the same question twice.
- Independent owners often work alone. Be the one who makes their week easier.
