Prices and search data updated October 2026.
Most plumbing company sites act like Home Depot does not exist. Or worse, they take shots at it. Neither works. The homeowner with a cold shower is already looking at a $499 tank on the store's site, and a plumber who ignores that looks like the expensive option with something to hide.
Do this instead. Answer the store question in one line, then show what a real install includes. Put your price beside it. The homeowner who reads that page stops comparing a box price to a full job, and starts comparing two full jobs.
What Home Depot Sells and How It Installs
Yes, Home Depot sells hot water heaters. Gas and electric tanks, tankless units and small point of use heaters. Our DataForSEO pull of the Google results for does home depot sell hot water heaters, United States, October 30, 2026, showed a product row where every top listing was sold by Home Depot. Rheem tank heaters ran from $499 to $999, and a small GE electric tankless was listed at $165.92.
The install side is where most homeowners get confused. Home Depot says it partners with local, licensed and insured professionals. If you live within 30 miles of a store and call before noon, it offers same day installation. A tank to tank swap takes two to three hours on average, and the installer removes the old unit when the job is done.1
The store's water heater page adds the rest of the pitch. Same day installation, free delivery and haul away, if you call by noon Monday through Friday.2 That is a strong offer. It is also a narrow one. A tank that fails on a Saturday, or after lunch, falls outside it.
So who does the work? A local, licensed pro the store sends. The homeowner is not really choosing between a plumber and a store. They are choosing between a pro they found and a pro the store sent.
What the Box Price Leaves Out
A $499 tank is not a $499 job. NerdWallet reports that Home Depot lists its average total cost at $1,950 for a tank install and $4,300 for tankless. The same piece puts labor alone at $150 to $450 for a tank and $600 to $1,900 for tankless, and permits at $25 to $300.3 Those are national averages, not your town. They still show the gap between the box and the bill.
Code is the next line. In California, every new and replacement water heater must be braced, anchored or strapped to resist falling in an earthquake. A seller must also certify that in writing to the buyer of the home.5 Many cities also want a permit for the swap. Newport Beach, for one, says plainly that water heater replacements require a plumbing permit.6
So give the homeowner a list of questions to ask every quote, ours included. A plumber who hands over the list first looks like the one with nothing to hide.
| Ask every quote | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the permit in the price? | Many cities require one, and the fee alone can run $25 to $300 |
| Are straps or bracing included? | Required on every new and replacement heater in California |
| Is haul away of the old tank included? | Home Depot's water heater page lists haul away in its same day offer |
| Who is the installer, and are they licensed? | The store says its pros are local, licensed and insured. Ask the same of anyone |
| What happens if the old fittings, vent or gas line need work? | Extra hours of plumbing, electrical or carpentry raise the total |
| When can you start? | Same day from the store depends on distance and calling before noon |

Who Holds This Search in October 2026
A plumbing company owner should see the field before writing a word. In that same October 30 pull, eight of the nine plain results were Home Depot pages, from the United States site or the Canada site. Two rows of products sat between them. The ninth result was a small water heater reseller.
That search belongs to the store, and it will keep it. The money sits one step over. In a second pull for home depot water heater installation cost, the top results were a Home Depot Canada buying guide, two discussion threads, the NerdWallet cost page, a 2016 forum post, a cost guide site and a Q and A site. The NerdWallet page had 27 linking websites in the same tool, and it was dated September 2025. No local plumber held a spot.
Now the demand. These are our Google Ads numbers for the United States, monthly averages from October 2025 to September 2026.
Monthly Searches Around the Big Box Question
Our Google Ads pull, United States, average of October 2025 to September 2026.
Home depot hot water heater hit 12,100 searches a month from November 2025 through March 2026, then fell to 8,100 by summer. Cold months break tanks. The install cost search carried an average cost per click of $7.43, and water heater replacement cost carried $16.66. Owners pay that to reach this buyer. A page that earns the same visit for free is worth a week of work.
The pool keeps refilling, too. The EIA's 2020 home energy survey counted 123.53 million homes. In 44.43 million of them, about 36 percent, the main water heater was 10 or more years old.4 Every one of those is a future search.
Win the Buyer Who Started at the Store
Most plumbers try to beat the store on its own name. That fight is lost before it starts. Win on the parts of the job the store's offer does not cover, and say so plainly.
- Write the comparison page. Call it something like water heater install cost, store vs local plumber. Answer the store question in the first line, then show the checklist table above with your answers filled in. The content brief lesson shows how to build the outline from the questions people ask.
- Post your installed price. One number for a standard 40 or 50 gallon gas tank swap, and one for electric. List what is in it, permit, straps, haul away, and what is not. The buyer came from a site with prices on every box. A call us for a quote button sends them back to it.
- Own the hours the store does not. Same day after noon. Saturday. A leak at 7 at night. If you cover those, put it at the top of the page and in your Google Business Profile services. The Google Business Profile lesson covers listing water heater replacement as its own service.
- Decide on customer bought units. Some homeowners will buy the tank and want you to put it in. Pick a rule and post it. If you install them, post the labor price and say plainly what your warranty covers when you did not supply the part. NerdWallet notes that a poor install can void the maker's warranty, which is a fair reason to say who stands behind what.3
- Show who does the work. Name the plumber, show the license number, and add a real photo of a strapped tank your crew installed. Google's guide to helpful, people first content asks whether it is clear who wrote a page and whether it shows first hand experience.8 The trust signals lesson covers the rest.
- Ask for the review that names the job. Water heater replaced same day, Saturday, old tank hauled off. Those words match what the next buyer types. The reviews lesson sets up the weekly ask.
Keep it fair to the store. Its installers are licensed pros too, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts median pay for plumbers at $30.67 an hour in May 2025.7 Your edge is not that the other guy is bad. It is that your page answered the question first, showed the whole price, and picked up on a Saturday.
